Core Competencies – School Wide Goals
The 3 core competencies are a central part of the redesign of curriculum and assessment in BC. Core competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social / emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deep learning and life-long learning.
The 3 Core Competencies:
1) Communication
2) Thinking
3) Personal & Social
More information about these core competencies can be found in the course outline.
“Big Ideas” of the course:
- Language and story can be a source of creativity and joy.
- Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.
- People understand text differently depending on their worldviews and perspectives.
- Texts are socially, culturally, and historically constructed.
- Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens.
These “Big Ideas” provide some focus areas and themes for this course, and help to demonstrate why English Language Arts is so important! Inquiry-based learning will be implemented into lessons to support independent and cooperative learning, and to foster critical thinking skills.
