Writing Conventions
I always like to start the year with the basics with both my grade 8 and grade 9 classes... things like sentence structure, reviewing the 8 parts of speech, how to write a paragraph, basic grammar/punctuation, etc. These skills form a solid base for the rest of the year.
To start, I like to get an idea of where everyone's writing level is at. To get a sense of this, we will start with a one-paragraph response to of a number of writing prompts. You will choose one of these prompts to respond to and write the best paragraph that you can, keeping in mind: punctuation, grammar, spelling, and sentence/paragraph structure.
After our writing prompt, we will work on developing our writing skills, starting with the very basics that will form a foundation for more complex forms of writing. This may be review to some, while brand new to others. We will work in this order:
1) Review the 8 parts of speech
2) The basic structure of a sentence
3) Common sentence errors
